THE VERY SMALL ALLOCATION OF AD/SAUTERNES CASK RELEASE I RECEIVED IS ONLY AVAILABLE IN A 'DOUBLE PACK' WITH THE FANTASTIC 'THE MIDGIE' RELEASE, IT IS NOT AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE AS A SINGLE BOTTLE.

The Ardnamurchan Distillery is the most Westerly distillery on the mainland of Scotland, sitting on a remote fifty square mile penisula with a single track road being the only access.

The distillery itself was opened in July 2014 and is owned by Adelphi Distillers, a business dating back to 1826 and were originally an independent bottling company looking to expand in whisky making themselves. Jamie Walker founded Adelphi in 1993 – his grandfather Archibald was previously an owner of the Loch Katrine Adelphi Distillery on the banks of the River Clyde. The business was eventually purchased by Keith Falconer and Donald Houston in 2003 and it was in 2007 that the first steps were taken to open a brand new distillery, as demand for Scotch whisky began to indicate it would be harder to source casks independently.

The Sauternes Cask Release is an 8 year old whisky produced from entirely unpeated barley, finished for 30 months in ex-Sauternes dessert wine barriques, with an outturn of around 6,000 bottles at an ABV of 50%. The wine influence is considerable, especially helped with the spirit being unpeated, which enables rich honey and soft floral notes to come through. THe higher ABV works too, adding a deeper, silky texture onto the palate. It is, yet again, another example of why I continue to be so impressed with the distillery output.

'The Midgie' is a celebration of the local wildlife that surrounds the distillery - and to be honest, most of Scotland too. Partnering with Smidge - the UK's no 1. midge repellent apparently - the team has produced a limited run of only 6,200 bottles of 60% peated and 40% unpeated spirit that has been matured in 13 ex-Bourbon, 1 ex-Sherry, 5 ex-Madeira and 5 ex-Sauternes casks.

There is bags of fruit and honey notes going on, with a soft but prevalent smokiness weaving through to a looooong finish. It's yet another stunning bottling from the distillery that will definintely take your mind off those little so-and-sos!
