The National Museum of the Royal Navy is based in Portsmouth, just across the Solent from the Isle of Wight Distillery - who partnered with them to produce a Navy Strength rum and gin in honour of the 'tots' that sailors would traditionally be given each day to boost morale.

The Distillery sourced rums from Guyana, Trinidad and Jamaica, marrying them in casks that also contained a stave from the HMS Victory itself - launched in 1765, she is the oldest commissioned warship in the world. So you can drink the rum knowing that you're experiencing some of the character of the ship itself - albeit in a very small way!

Now you might think this is just a marketing exercise to shift a few bottles in a museum - and I was in exactly the same boat... um, ship, when I was presented with a sample of it. But I was incredibly impressed at the rich, dark coffee and high-cocoa chocolate flavours that fill the glass, along with a depth of texture that makes water not a necessity given the high strength. I think this is great even at room temperature, whereas as most high strength dark rums tend to need chilling slightly to tempre the alcohol heat. It also provides a strong backbone for rum-based cocktails such as Mai Tais, and even works well in a rum Old Fashioned. This was a really pleasant surprise to encounter, and I'm really happy to share it with you!
