Not as you might think based on a Star Wars droid, 'RD1' stands for Registered Distillery One and was founded in 2020 in Lexington, Kentucky. The bottle and labelling take cues from the William Tarr Distillery, the first distillery to be registered in the city.

The founders of RD One initially decided that they'd enter the market by setting up a store/gift shop in Lexington to sell their bottles. The plan was to sell the large majority of their product at their own location since they recognized that small producers are at a disadvantage when it comes to distribution. Why's that? In a nutshell, distributors respond better if producers give them sales incentives to sell more cases to retailers. The smaller producers usually don't have the capital to give the distributors the same kinds of incentives as the bigger guys, so they often lose out.

But fate had different plans for the business. Within months after opening, the pandemic closed their storefront down. Faced with an uncertain future, they had no choice but to play the distribution game. This required much more capital to increase barrel purchases and bottling capacity. Luckily they secured enough and the result has been that their bottles are now for sale in 22 states as of 2024.

The spirit itself is sourced from the Green River Distillery, using a mashbill of 70% corn, 21% rye and 9% malted barley. After intiial maturation of a minimum of 4 years in virgin American oak, three batches then undergoing a 'finishing' process - but instead of the whiskey being transferred into secondary barrels, a 'necklace' of wood pieces are inserted through the bunghole (careful now) to impart differing influences, such as French oak or Amburana wood.

However, having tried all four versions side-by-side, I have to say I'm more impressed with the 'core' release as it features a great balance of vanilla and dry spice that make it thoroughly enjoyable neat or in a quality cocktail. The wood finishes kinda get in the way of an already excellent whiskey, and sometimes you just need to keep things simple to get something really special.
