The English Whisky Company
The English Distillery Founder's Private Cellar 17yo English Single Malt Whisky 55.3% 70cl
The English Whisky Company is based at the St. George’s Distillery in Roundham, Norfolk, about 30 minute South-West of Norwich. The first whisky distillery sited in England for 100 years – the Lea Valley Distillery in London was the last to operate in the country until it’s closure in 1905 - it was founded in 2006 by father and son James and Andrew Nelstrop, who were part of generations of arable farmers but were looking to diversify their operations due to concerns with the future of the industry they had spent years working in. Initially Iain Henderson, previously the Master Distiller of Laphroiag, was brought on board to oversee operations, before being joined in 2018 and eventually replaced by the current Master Distillery David Fitt, who had previously been a master brewer with Greene King and mentored with Iain until he was able to take over the reins.
Sadly James Nelstrop passed away in September 2014, but Andrew continues to drive the business forward with unbridled passion and enthusiasm.
There is currently have a core range of an unpeated Original and a heavily peated Smoky edition, as well as various peated and unpeated bottlings that have spent time in a variety of cask types.
The Founder’s Private Cellar selection, first started by James Nelstrop, features incredibly rare releases of some of their oldest casks.
The latest bottling is the oldest English Single Malt whisky currently available to date, overtaking the 16yo Port Cask release that was available in 2023. Whereas that bottling featured peated barley, this has zero PPM. Only 285 bottles were decanted from a cask that had previously held Portugese Cabernet Sauvignon, which imparts powerful dark red fruit notes and a hint of tannin, particularly on the finish. But the considerable age has softened that drying note, adding a waft of white pepper and soft spices.
As the English whisky market continues to expand, it's wonderful to be present as older and older bottlings are released and evidence the quality of the spirit that was laid down in the early days.
