Alastair Brogan was originally born in Motherwell, Scotland and after a period in the RAF moved across to Boulder, Colorado with his family. A lifelong fan of single malt whisky, he spent time researching whiskymaking by visiting over 100 distilleries not only in the US but around the world, including an internship at Arran, all with a view of making an American Single Malt.

But Bourbon is VERY popular in the US, and he quickly realised he needed to produce that in order to maximise income, so the Boulder Spirits portfolio (which is also known as the Vapor Distillery) includes a Straight and Bottled-in-Bond Bourbon too.

But Alastair is desperate to grow appreciation for Single Malt whiskies within the US, and as such we can consider this a true representation of what he is trying to achieve - there's even a Peated bottling. This particular release is unpeated, but apparently it does use barley malted in Scotland as opposed to local or even US barley. There's no age statment and official notes just state it's matured for a minimum of 3 years in #3 char new American oak barrels.

There is a warm and round malty note throughout, along with hints of red apples, cherries and dark chocolate, with a distinctly spicy note on the finish. There's Bourbon-y notes in it, and tasting blind I'd probably be convinced it's American but almost certainly wouldn't pick it out as 100% barley. It's a very interesting dram indeed, and well worth checking out!
