One of the most distinctive bottles to be found on a drinks shelf, Galliano liqueur was created by Aturo Vaccari in 1896 in Tuscany, and is named after Maggiore Galliano, a soldier in the Abyssinian War of 1887-1896 who became a legendary war hero.

One of the biggest selling liqueurs in the USA in the 1970s, the liqueur gradually became sweeter and less alcoholic over the years in an effort to reduce costs. After Bols purchased the brand from Remy Cointreau in 2006 there was a determination to reproduce the original recipe, which was released as 'L'Autentico' with the previous version rebranded as this - Galliano Vanilla.

25 botanicals infused in a base beet-spirit - some of the botanicals are a closely guarded secret but it is known that the following are used: Bulgarian coriander, clove, yarrow, cardamom seeds, white deadnettle, sandal wood, Sri Lankan cinnamon, mugwort, lavender, sage, orris, ginger and peppermint.

It's interesting to try the two recipes side-by-side - the 'authentic' is much more intense as you might expect, but you can still pick out most of the complexity despite the much sweeter feel to this release. A Harvey Wallbanger was one of my all-time favourite cocktails growing up, and this is an absolute must with orange juce and vodka!
