The West Brewery - situated on the outskirts of Elgin - was opened in 1828, but in 1897 it was converted to a whisky distillery as part of a whisky-making boom in the country. However when the industry slumped in the early 1900s it closed in 1910, to be reopened in 1923 by the owners of the Glenmorangie Distillery.

As whisky grew back into popularity and Glenmorangie became one of the biggest brands in Scotch, Glen Moray became known as the 'budget' alternative, producing light, easy drinking whisky at a more affordable price.

In 2008 it was sold to French firm La Martiniquaise, mainly to provide stock of their Label Five and Glen Turner brands. But as production increased the distillery continued to churn out quality spirit at an excellent price.

The Classic - aged in ex-Bourbon casks for an average of 7 years - is a great grounding for the distillery - it's light but has a silky texture, with hints of orchard fruits, a touch of citrus and waves of butterscotch. Sure, it's not the most complex whiskies you will ever drink, but in a group of people there will be very few people - if any - who won't finish the glass!
