    Purchased from Chivas in 2017 by whisky blender and entrepreneur Billy Walker - who had previously revitalised Benriach and Glendronach - Glenallachie has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity since it's relaunch in 2018, mainly thanks to a core selection which have been consistently excellent thanks to a dedicated focus on wood quality for maturation - care and attention is given to every cask in their 16 warehouses both before and after being filled with spirit.

    The 12yo absolutely highlights what Billy has achieved to get some high praise. It's hard to believe the deep ochre colour is natural, but apparently this is so - thanks to maturation in ex-Bourbon, Oloroso and PX Sherry casks, along with some virgin oak barrels. It's full of rich dark fruit flavours, along with a noticeable presence of high cocoa dark chocolate, providing both a slightly sweet yet slightly earthy note.

    If someone was to ask me directly for a single representation of Speyside Scotch Single Malt Whisky, this would certainly be up there as a classic style of dark fruit, soft spice and sweet Sherry. It's an absolute stunner and I would be very surprised if anyone who has just a passing interest in whisky doesn't like this.
