Some of you might remember American Eagle, a Bourbon brand with a very distinctive bottle that ended up being challenged in court by Sazerac, owners of Eagle Rare. Halewood Artisinal Drinks, owners of American Eagle, fought back but were unsuccessful, and so rebranded the whiskey - while keeping the chunky bottle - and renamed it James Cree's, a whisky maker and entrepreneur who in 1853 married the daughter of John Crabbie, a name which continues to be well known in the whisky trade. In 1888 he moved with his family to New Mexico to look after his investment in the 'VV' cattle ranch, managed by Pat Garrett.

Using this as inspiration for the rebrand, James Cree's Cattle Ranch Whiskey is an 8yo Bourbon with a mashbill of 80% corn, 10% and 10% malted barley, distilled in an unnamed distillery in Tennessee - but clues point towards Dickel.

The high corn content provides a distinct sweetness with the rye supplying a kick of spice on the finish. While it's not the most complex whiskey in the world it does have enough backbone to work nicely in an Old Fashioned and the bottle sure does look good on the shelf!
