    Established in 1948, Douglas Laing & Co is an independent whisky bottler based in Glasgow. Still family-run by founder Fred's (Douglas was his middle name) son Fred and granddaughter Cara (Fred's brother left in 2013 to set up Hunter Laing whiskies), the company has a distinctly jovial and amenable character about both the whiskies produced and the people who work there - I've met Fred and Cara a few times previously and they are utterly lovely.

    Scallywag features a dog on the front label, in honour of the long line of Fox Terriers that have been pets for the Laing family. It's part of a range of Blended Malts that highlight particular regions - indeed, the range is called the Remarkable Regional Malts collection. Big Peat is probably the best known, exemplifying the best of Islay character.

    Scallywag contains Speyside whiskies - and in this limited Winter Edition, bottled at a cask strength of 54% ABV - that have been matured exclusively in Pedro Ximenez and Oloroso Sherry barrels. The result is a richly fruity whisky with notes of black cherry, plum, prune, a twist of black pepper - but what stands out more than anything is a rich, creamy mouthfeel of top quality darkmilk chocolate that's flecked with orange zest. It's a stunning dram, one to savour after dinner or use as the base for a powerful Rob Roy with a top drawer sweet Vermouth.
